SunGlacier uses Regular Materials to Harvest Water from Air

Inhabitat shared on their website that Ap Verheggen has spent the last 6 years working on a way to produce water from sunshine and air. Now his ideas have become reality in the form of a water fountain on display at The Hague. The parts used were purchased from regular stores, the Dutch artist created the 8-meter tall metal and wood sculpture that takes advantage of solar energy in powering a dehumidifier that condenses water from humidity in the atmosphere. Verheggen says that the sculpture represents an important step toward realizing the bigger goal of providing water in places where it’s scarce.

According to UN Water, every day, there are 6-8 million people die as a direct result of disasters and water-related diseases. These numbers are expected to rise because of climate change. Verheggen stated that the project is designed to encourage other people to devise solutions that can help meet and resolve the increasing demand for clean water.

The fountain is a proof of concept made with cedar wood on a metal stand. The sculpture is installed with 2 250-watt solar panels and rechargeable battery pack. The water produced is discharged at intervals from the tip of the sculpture, plus the fountain works best in sunny conditions. Verheggen said that the condenser the he bought in a local store produces 2 litre per square meter of solar. His goal is to produce 8 litres solar water in the future.

The project is currently part of the Museum of the Sculpture on the Sea. The fountain will be on display until October 2, 2016.
