A group of local government councils is joining forces in an effort to resolve climate change. These group of councils has been inspired by a new report from the Climate Council that show cities, urban centres and rural towns have the potential to reduce energy emissions by about 70%.
35 councils that represent around 3 million Australians have already committed to the Cities Power Partnership which is a Climate Council initiative to reduce emissions at a local level. Millions of the local residents are already involved from installing solar panels to taking action in their own homes.
Amanda McKenzie, Climate Council chief executive said the local leadership was very important and added in the absence of national action, the more local action is needed. She also added that she was frustrated by the policy inaction from the national government.
Climate scientist Will Steffen said it was possible for local councils to make a real difference in reducing carbon emissions.
